BirdEd

Designed by teachers for teachers, BirdEd produces curriculum and lesson plans to enable the use of Stories to Save Us in secondary and post-secondary classrooms.

Meeting at least six NGSX standards at HS, 2-yr and 4-yr levels, BirdEd leverages innovative storytelling and world class cinematography to reach a diverse student audience, teach ecology and engage through the engrossing story of a filmmaking team.

Students follow behind-the scenes as the filmmakers struggle to capture key shots, dig deep into research and finally explore restoration and mitigation efforts. Each BirdEd lesson plan is tailored to a Stories to Save Us episode, featuring a specific bird species challenged by climate change and other environmental issues in our familiar American landscapes - wetlands, oceans, forests, shorelines, farms, suburbs, cities and prairies.

Narrative, cultural, historical, technical film production and ecological themes link learning across a variety of academic disciplines, showing students that science is not siloed but vibrant and connected to the everyday. BirdEd provides a launch pad from which they can explore conservation challenges in their local area, link into community resources, and see landscapes through fresh eyes – as complex ecosystems on which we also depend.
