A Black Rail's Tale
The poetry of
J. Drew Lanham and animation of award-winning artist
Lynn Tomlinson weave art and history together to tell how modern efforts to save the rare Black Rail depends on the agricultural legacy of the enslaved African Americans who shaped the southern marshes for rice-growing.
BirdStory is currently working with partners, including the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and beyond to create an effective, grassroots impact campaign. We are also reaching out to educators to shape a K-8 BirdEd lesson plan.
On the Strangest Sea
Musician Kristin Hauge’s composition based on data points showing the anticipated trajectory of extinction of the Saltmarsh Sparrow is illustrated by Emmy-winning animator, Hayley Morris.

Talking Tubman
With the help of illustrations by Maryland children, Angie Crenshaw, Head of Maryland State Parks, reflects on Harriet Tubman’s relationship to the marsh where she grew up as an enslaved woman and how she used her knowledge of the landscape to escape and guide others to liberty.
