The Whimbrel- Resilience

Because of Lacey Act and Migratory Bird Act of the early 1900s, Whimbrels still traverse their ancient, 15,000-mile coastal migratory routes between South America and the Arctic.  And they still gather on the Atlantic Flyways Barrier Islands in great, vocal numbers. They prove the resilience of a species given a chance – unlike their cousin, the Eskimo Curlew that was overhunted to extinct in the 1950s.  The Whimbrel still faces the challenge of hunting as it also faces the pressure of climate change.
